Dunleavy, Los Angeles Clippers sever ties

LOS ANGELES (AP)—Mike Dunleavy and the Los Angeles Clippers parted company for good Tuesday, barely a month after he relinquished his head coaching duties to focus solely on being general manager.

Now that arrangement is over, with the team announcing his departure in an e-mailed statement. Assistant general manager Neil Olshey will take over Dunleavy’s job.

“The team has simply not made sufficient progress during Dunleavy’s seven-year tenure,” the statement said. “The Clippers want to win now. This transition, in conjunction with a full commitment to dedicate unlimited resources, is designed to accomplish that objective.”

The Clippers were 12th in the Western Conference standings with a 25-38 record going into Tuesday night’s game at Orlando.

Dunleavy stepped down as head coach on Feb. 4, and was replaced by assistant Kim Hughes.

At the time, Dunleavy said, “I thought, ‘It’s time for me to give somebody else a shot, you’re burnt out on this.”’

Olshey had been serving as assistant GM since before the 2008-09 season. Previously, he was director of player development, assistant coach and director of player personnel.

The team said he played an important role in several transactions, including deals that brought Marcus Camby, Rasual Butler, Steve Blake, Travis Outlaw and Drew Gooden to the Clippers. Olshey also was part of the planning for the team’s last four NBA drafts, including obtaining Blake Griffin as the No. 1 overall pick last season.

Griffin has missed this season because of injury.

The move comes with the Clippers having significant salary cap space in hopes of luring a top free agent this summer.

In 6 1/2 seasons as coach, Dunleavy was 215-325, and Los Angeles made the playoffs just once in his first six seasons, getting within one game of the Western Conference finals in 2006. The Clippers haven’t been back to the playoffs since, winning just 42 games in the past two seasons.

Last month, Dunleavy said, “I wanted to stay with this organization, see things through, one way or the other. I would have rather done it as a successful coach, but on the other hand, I can see ahead. It was going to be a tough struggle all the way through.”

Cliff Lee to Seattle, Roy Halladay to Phillies

An agreement is now in place to send Roy Halladay to the Phillies, Cliff Lee to the Mariners, and prospects to the Blue Jays, major-league sources confirmed to FOXSports.com.

The sources said Phillipe Aumont — a Canadian right-hander — is among the players headed from Seattle to Toronto in the deal; the source added the Philadelphia is expected to send one of its outfield prospects, possibly Michael Taylor, to the Blue Jays.
Outfielder Michael Saunders and right-hander Brandon Morrow were also among the Seattle prospects in play.

It wasn't immediately clear how many players would be included in the deal. One person familiar with the talks said he didn't anticipate an announcement on Monday, an indication that the customary review of medical records is not yet complete.

SI.com was the first to report the agreement on Monday afternoon. The three-team possibility with Lee going to Seattle was first raised in a FOXSports.com column posted Saturday.

Halladay is currently in Philadelphia, major league sources said. The only plausible reasons for him to be there now would be to negotiate a contract extension, take a physical or both.

One source said that — as of shortly after 3 p.m. Monday — the commissioner's office had not granted the Phillies permission to discuss an extension with Halladay. Halladay likely would agree to a contract extension with the Phillies to waive his no-trade clause.

Lee, signed for one more year at $9 million, will bea free agent after next season. The Phillies had been uncertain of whether they could sign him, but by acquiring Halladay — and locking him up with an extension — they are securing an ace long-term.

The trade is highly complex, sources say, with the Phillies receiving money from the Jays to help pay Halladay's salary next season. Halladay is owed $15.75 million, but that number could be negotiated down as part of a new contract agreement.

One source with knowledge of the Mariners' plans said Jack Zduriencik has been looking for two starting pitchers — not just one. Lee will now slot behind ace Felix Hernandez. It's not clear who the No. 3 starter will be, since Morrow may be included in the trade.

The agreement comes at a difficult time for the Angels, who also had interest in Lee. The Angels also recently lost Chone Figgins to the Mariners and are on the verge of losing John Lackey to Boston. The Angels are reportedly in negotiations with designated hitter Hideki Matsui.

As the blockbuster nears completion, the Braves are an interested bystander. The Angels now appear to be among the favorites to acquire Derek Lowe. They could offer outfielder Juan Rivera, who is the type of right-handed run producer that Atlanta is seeking.
