How to sing Lupang Hinirang properly

In every fight of Manny Pacquiao except for his fight the Filipino people are also awaiting to watch who's going to sing and how is he/she going to sing the national antheme of the Philipppines - the "Lupang Hinirang". On the Pacquiao-Hatton fight, Martin Nievera was chosen to sing the national antheme - the first male who sing it on Pacquiao's fight.

Martin Nievera started to sang the antheme slowly and then shifted into a martial beat in the middle and ended it with a sustained high note. Watch the video.

Though the Filipino crowd enjoy his rendition of the "Lupang Hinirang", the National Historical Institute (NHI) was not happy of it. According to Ambeth Ocampo, NHI chair, “Lupang Hinirang” is “not open to free interpretation,” and Nievera's rendition of it is unacceptable.

The law said that "Lupang Hinirang" should be sang in a marching beat. Section 37 of Republic Act No. 8491 also known as the 1998 Flag and Heraldic Code of the Philippines states that “the rendition of the National Anthem, whether played or sung, shall be in accordance with the musical arrangement and composition of Julian Felipe.”

But according to Martin Nievera he sang the antheme the way he understood it and the way Pacquiao wanted him to sang it.

This is not the first time to happen, on previous fights of Pacquiao NHI also criticized some artist for its rendition of the antheme, and who could forget Christian Bautista for skipping few lines of Lupang Hinirang while he sang it.

Prejudices considered, the NHI is right to express its dissatisfaction in the way "Mr. Nievera" (as addressed by Jomari Yllana) sang the "Philippine National Anthem". The Anthem, its lyrics and all, stands for itself thus doesn't need to be tinkered with. Mr. Nievera was asked to sing on a fight of Manny Pacquiao but he appeared in the ring as if it was "his concert". The "inspiration" the Filipinos get is from Manny himself. Even if it was Alyssa Alano who sang the National Anthem Manny would still have won.
